A band of evil demons that are opposed by the Justice League.

Description[]

The Brothers Djinn are a group of five demons - djinn is an Arabic word meaning 'demon' or 'genie' - and are depicted as weird, anthropoid monsters with unusual colors and patterns on their skin, and they speak with a variety of accents; three of them sound like Cockneys. Kept trapped in the walls of the Rock of Eternity by The Wizard, they are released by Black Adam to "unleash a new era of woe" upon the world. We are told that they had ruled the "foul and ancient, newly-formed Earth" long ago and intend to do so again after returning it to its original state by splitting open its crust.

Their powers are magical and can involve casting spells - like one to make superheroes lose their powers or another to cause a volcano to erupt. Two of the Djinn have unique abilities: one can absorb a person to acquire their powers and another is able to possess a person to take control of their body and mind before transforming in to a monstrous hybrid version of them.

Black Adam makes use of their abilities to terrorise the world and, by transforming them into monsters, to fight the Justice League but he is not shown to be their leader. Batman says that they need to be returned to the Rock of Eternity, but it is not clear where they go when they are finally defeated.

Notes[]

  • Their name must be a play on "The Brothers Grimm", the nineteenth-century German fairy-tale writers, and also the name of a movie from 2005.
  • As an unnamed brotherhood, Abnegazar, Rath and Ghast were first seen in the Justice League of America comics in the 1960s and were later known as the 'Demons Three'. The names Calythos, Uthool and Nyorlath were only attached to magical objects that the demons used.
